Coaching Philosophy:  

At its core, I believe speech is about connection – to our stories, to our audiences, and to one another. The beauty of this activity lies in its ability to amplify voices, share untold stories, and help us better understand the world and the people in it. Whether through humor, vulnerability or bold advocacy, speech gives us the power to challenge, educate, and inspire. As a coach, my goal is to help students find and cultivate the stories they’re passionate about telling and assist them in developing the skills they need to create something that is authentic, impactful, and uniquely theirs! Every performer brings something special to the table and I believe the best performances happen when students feel comfortable and confident leaning into their own voices, perspectives, and ideas. I tailor my coaching style and perspective to each individual performer, but one thing remains consistent. While 3P Speech is governed by its 3 Ps, I guide my work with each student using my 3 Es: Expertise, Energy, and Encouragement! 

Alice Hovendon

Short Bio:

Hi there! My name is Alice Hovendon. I graduated back in 2022 from Eagan High School in Minnesota and am currently a student at McGill University in Montréal, Quebec, where I study Sociology and Psychology! 

I LOVE speech – seriously, I love it. I started performing as a freshman in high school and during my time on the team, I was fortunate to compete in DUO, DI, POI, and HI (though DUO will always hold a very special place in my heart). I was a Minnesota State Champion in DUO in 2021, as well as a State finalist the following year. Also in 2021, I was a semi-finalist at NIETOC in both DUO and DI, and a finalist in POI, coming in 5th. My partner and I were second runner-ups at the 2021 NSDA National Tournament in Asynchronous Duo Interp. In 2022, after qualifying for Nationals in both HI and DUO, my partner and I were semi-finalists at NSDA Nationals, following a 2nd place finish at NIETOC that year. 

Since graduating, I’ve been coaching and am consistently blown away by the incredible talent I’ve been lucky enough to work with! I’m so excited to get to meet you all and start getting to work!

Expertise:

• Research: Strong performances are built on strong foundations of high-quality literature, research, and understanding. I’m confident in helping students conduct thorough research in order to provide unique perspectives and strong arguments. 

• Cutting & Story Construction: I work closely with students to cut and shape material in ways that enhance clarity, emotional progression, and thematic cohesion. I emphasize building creative pieces that students feel comfortable with, excited by, and proud of performing. 

• Acting & Performance Analysis: I offer detailed and supportive feedback on all aspects of performance, including vocal modulation, physicality, character development, and emotional authenticity. My goal is to see performers bring depth, dimension, and specificity to every performance. 

• Teach & Movement: I work with students to develop purposeful, creative blocking that works to enhance clarity, create dynamic visual storytelling, and deepen the audience’s (and the performer’s) connection to the piece.
